So where does USPS fit in to all of this?  Well, we ship almost exclusively via USPS and it was their awesome, super fast and excellently priced service that got Santa his new favorite snack in the “Old Saint Nick” of time! 451st EAMXS / 62nd ERS with Predator and Just Poppin

7/4/2011 – Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan — Members of the 451st Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and 62nd Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron get a popcorn fueled morale boost from JustPoppin.com.

It’s the 4th of July and with all the patriotism flowing, we thought it would be a good time to tell you about the great experience we had sending 2 large JustPoppin.com care packages to troops in Afghanistan.

Regardless of one’s politics – and we’re not going to talk politics here – we all have to realize that for better or for worse, there are tens of thousands of American men and women, some just past being “boys and girls”, living in a hostile land very far from their homes, their families, and their loved ones. Sometimes, small gestures or little reminders of home can bring a bit of happiness to these troops and give them a morale boost that may carry them through another day. At JustPoppin.com, we frequently make a point of talking about our troops and the situation they find themselves in, as well as discussing ideas on how we might contribute in some way to help raise their spirits.

So we were excited when we hooked up via email with a US Air Force Senior Master Sergeant serving in the 451st Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron with the 62nd Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron. These are the men and women responsible for the maintenance, launch and recovery of the Reaper and Predator remotely flown aircraft serving out of Kandahar, Afghanistan.

It was a few months ago that the Senior Master Sergeant introduced us to the opportunity to do something tangible for our troops  We jumped at the chance. It wasn’t long before we had bundled up 2 large APO boxes filled with Tender Pop Hulless Popcorn, Flavacol popcorn salt, Butter Flavored Coconut Oil, White Coconut Oil, Redi-Glaze Caramel Glaze, Chocolate Glaze, and Kettle Corn Glaze, and Popcorn Bags.  We wanted to make sure they got the full Just Poppin Popcorn experience and that there would be plenty to share around! We were honored to be asked if we’d like to have one of our banners flown on a Reaper mission.

Packages can take a long time to be delivered to APO addresses and we waited and waited to hear that the packages had arrived. Finally, we received word that the shipment had arrived and that they were all enjoying it thoroughly. We were ecstatic, and that was even before we saw the photos they sent back to us.

We learned that our JustPoppin.com banner did indeed fly on a Reaper mission along with an American flag that they are sending to us. You can be sure it will be given a place of honor here at Just Poppin Popcorn Headquarters.

We wanted to share this story and these photos with you today, this 4th of July, 2011 as we celebrate our nation’s birthday, the freedoms we enjoy, and the honor of those who have fought for that freedom. by Stephen W. Hawking
This book should be required reading for all students at some point in their schooling. Pretty much everyone knows that Hawking is the most brilliant mind on the planet since Einstein. But along with that massive intellect, he has an ability to make the most arcane and complicated topics in physics understandable for nearly everyone. It’s hard to imagine how more and more people go through life without a basic understanding of the universe around them. More people reading this book would go a long way to helping reverse this trend. You may not understand every little thing on every single page, but as a complete work, it will expand your mind and help you realize how the tiniest particles imaginable can impact the largest structures known – galactic clusters and the universe itself. If you read one “educational” book in your life, I think this one should be at the top of the list.

9. Cleopatra: A Life
by Stacy Schiff
This richly detailed biography shows that Cleopatra has been underestimated for a very long time. It turns out that she wasn’t just the scantily clad seductress portrayed on the silver screen. She was a charismatic, intelligent strategist that significantly prolonged Egypt’s place as a center of commerce and learning in the face of an ambitious and growing Roman Empire. Her end did come tragically but only after a 20 year rule of monumental proportions.

10. The Physics of Star Trek
by Lawrence M. Krauss
I absolutely love this book and have been recommending it to people since I first read it at the time of its first printing in 1995. You’ll be amazed to learn how much of the technology of Star Trek is theoretically possible. Yes, the energy demands may be astronomical and the necessary conditions just right, but thinking about topics like these, beyond the realm of current knowledge, is what got us to the Moon and has led to Star Trek “predicted” things such as directed energy weapons, cellular communications, tablet computers, etc.    I also think there are legions of science teachers who could use this book a the basis for an entire year’s curriculum.

5. Hi-De-Ho: The Life of Cab Calloway
by Alyn Shipton
In my swing dancing days, nothing got me going like Cab Calloway. Meeting and getting to know Fayard Nicolas who starred with Calloway in Stormy Weather, and getting some inside scoop on the man who brought Minnie the Moocher to life, was one of the highlights of my life. This book follows Calloway from his beginnings in Chicago through his 10 year reign as the King of the Cotton Club in Harlem. You’ll learn more about Calloway, his life, and his influence in this one book than you will from all of the other books written about him combined.

6. Voyager: Seeking Newer Worlds in the Third Great Age of Discovery
by Stephen J. Pyne
I just heard Neil DeGrasse Tyson call the Voyager mission ‘the greatest mission of discovery in the history of mankind’. After more than 30 years of travelling at unimaginable speed, Voyager 1 is reaching edge of the solar system and crossed into the Heliopause, the space where the sun’s influence shrinks away and the solar wind speed slows to zero and is deflected by interstellar winds. Learn about the mission and the ideals that began and continue the “third age of discovery.”

7. Griftopia: Bubble Machines, Vampire Squids, and the Long Con that Is Breaking America
by Matt Taibbi
In this persuasive book, based on Taibbi’s riveting 2009 Rolling Stone article on Goldman Sachs, both political parties take heat for what Taibbi calls the “two Americas”: one for “the grifter class” i.e. investment bankers, and “one for everyone else.” His description of the investment bank as “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity” brings to mind the parasitic stage of the “Alien” of movie fame – completely and utterly terrifying.

1. Autobiography of Mark Twain, Vol. 1
by Mark Twain
It’s not just because we share a birthday, albeit a century apart. It’s because after you spend about 10 minutes reading some of his work, you’ll realize the guy is still so pertinent it’s as if he had a time machine. Mark Twain writes in the language of his day about things we’re dealing with right now in the 21st century. It’s fascinating. Oh, and most of what he writes is pretty darn funny.

2. The Viking in the Wheat Field: A Scientist’s Struggle to Preserve the World’s Harvest
by Susan Dworkin
We tweeted about this book a while back, when it was first released. It’s the incredible story of the world’s seed banks and the preservation of our food supply. If you eat, and plan to continue doing so, you should read this.

3. Priceless: How I Went Undercover to Rescue the World’s Stolen Treasures
by Robert K. Wittman
We feel a bit of camaraderie with Robert K. Wittman, the FBI agent who lived the stories he wrote about in this book, because he’s a fellow Philadelphian. The book really highlights the benefits of being able to see a situation from both sides and to benefit from that knowledge. Follow Wittman as he becomes fluent in art history while befriending criminals he would eventually capture.

4. Aftershock: The Next Economy and America’s Future
by Robert B. Reich
Reich is a pretty insightful guy. From a purely political standpoint, you may not like him or want to listen to what he has to say. But he’s smart and does the research necessary to back up his positions. He also cares deeply about the US and its citizens. This book lays out the structural history of the 2008 financial bust in very easy to understand terms. It may help you see a side of the situation you never thought about before.
